Team Gaither topped Team Robinson 27–23 at Yulman Stadium on Saturday, claiming the title in the fifth annual Allstate HBCU Legacy Bowl.The game was more of an offensive showcase than previous Legacy Bowls, with the two teams combining for 50 points, the most in the history of the game, and 619 yards. South Carolina State University head coach and Team Gaither co-head coach Chennis Berry earned his second victory in the Legacy Bowl.”They came the whole week and they took advantage of every opportunity they got,” Berry said. “The separation is in the preparation. I thought we prepared really well this week and we found a way to go 1-0.”Team Gaither swept the game’s top honors, with Winston-Salem State running back JaQuan Kelly taking home Offensive MVP after a powerhouse 76-yard, two-touchdown performance. On the other side of the ball, South Carolina State defensive lineman Michael Lunz took Defensive MVP, tallying 1.5 sacks.Both teams were able to move the ball effectively 15 passing plays between the two teams going for more than 15+ yards and nine rushing plays of 10+ yards.”It was real great seeing everybody just shining,” Kelly said. “You don’t really get to see best on the best all the time so it was just great being around it.”
