Blue Origin’s all female space flight is scheduled to lift off Monday morning from Texas. Among the women on the flight, two Black women: former NASA Rocket Scientist, Aisha Bowe, and Broadcast Journalist, Gayle King. The What We Need to Know Newsletter wanted to pay tribute to the first Black woman to lead the way to space, Dr. Mae Jemison.
Dr. Mae C. Jemison made history September 12, 1992, by becoming the first woman of color to travel to space. Dr. Jemison took her lone flight to the stars aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour before moving on to a stellar career in education.
Mae Carol Jemison was born October 17, 1956 in Decatur, Ala. but considers Chicago home. Jemison at first wanted to be a dancer and actress, all the while excelling in academics. She graduated from Chicago’s Morgan Park High School in 1973 at the age of 16 and entered Stanford University.
