Well, it’s that time of year. After we have gained on the average…10 pounds between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day, it is time to hit the gym and cut back on calories. But did you know we are not just doing it for ourselves? We are doing it for God. Do you know why? Because our bodies are not ours, they temples for Him.
In the Bible, 1 Corinthians 6:19, the Apostle Paul said, “Do you know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own.” Our bodies don’t belong to us. Our bodies belong to God and He is counting on us to be good stewards over HIS PROPERTY. We as Christians, collectively represent “the church,” God’s temple, and the place where His presence resides. Our bodies are also individual temples for God and He wants us to take care of his temples, mind, body and soul.
The Bible speaks of defiling God’s temples, your bodies. In 1 Corinthians 3:16-17, Paul talks about wanting believers to understand that “The Church,” our bodies, collectively, is a holy sanctuary where God’s spirit lives and if any one defiles the temple of God, God will destroy them. I know that sounds a little harsh, but defiling God’s property is serious and Paul wants us to know that.
You can defile your body, God’s temple, in many ways. Thinking negative thoughts, plotting against others, Jealousy, division, over indulging in food, drinks, promiscuities, etc. We are not to defile our temples of God, but to “make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification” (Romans 14:19), mind body and soul.
So, let’s all try to be good stewards over our bodies, which are on loan to us from God. Let’s make our bodies (His Temples) a pleasant place for Him to live and for us to thrive, grow, serve others and serve Him.
