When we hear IN GOD WE TRUST, the first thing we think about is it being on money. The phrase first appeared on currency in 1864, became the official national motto in 1956, and was mandated on all U.S. coins and paper money by Congress in 1955. But IN GOD WE TRUST has a much bigger meaning than that. Let’s dissect it.
According to Webster, TRUST is confidence; a reliance or resting of the mind of the integrity, veracity, justice friendship, or other sound principles of another person. The last two words in that sentence, “another person,” that part, that’s a problem. I will expound on that later. On the other hand, TRUST IN GOD means that you believe in HIM wholeheartedly. Full stop. No exceptions. For EVERYTHING! Why? For your own good. Proverbs 3:5-6 reads, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not rely on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and he will direct your path.” God’s got your back if you trust Him.
Now, if you don’t trust God above all others, there are consequences. Remember those two words I said we would come back to? Well, here is what happens when you put your trust in “another person.” Jeremiah 17:5: Thus saith the LORD; Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and who’s heart departeth from the LORD. So what God is saying is you can trust “man” if you want to, but if you do, depart from me. I know it’s a little harsh, but He is trying to get His point across. Either you are going to trust man or you are going to trust God.
So what happens when you trust God? God will keep you in perfect peace as long as your mind is stayed on Him )Isaiah 26:3). What are the benefits of trusting in God? You’ll be blessed beyond measure! Blessed is the man that trusteth in the LORD and whose hope the LORD is. (Jeremiah 17:7). Now, there is no quick fix for trusting in God. It might take a minute for what you are trusting Him for to come to past. That’s where your patience will come into play. You have to have faith and WAIT on LORD and while you are waiting, keep saying to yourself…”IN GOD I TRUST.”
