Yesterday, July 19, marked the 104th Birthday of Mrs. Rachel Robinson, incredible human being and active participant in American history for most of her life. Known to the world as the widow of trailblazer Jackie Robinson, Mrs. Rachel played a great role in the history of this country, as a member of the Cadet Nurses Corps, which included the integration and the evolution of this country including Major League Baseball, as not only his “help-meet,” but also as his protector. As it was written, “She understood, even in that moment, how much Jack’s elevation meant to ‘Black America, and how much we symbolized its hunger for opportunity and its determination to make dreams long deferred possible.’”
