Last week, we told you about the City of Bethlehem and how Jesus came about being born in Bethlehem. Now, we are going to tell you about the exact place he was born in Bethlehem and why. That place was a stable and in a manger. You know the Bible is full of symbolisms and this story is no different. So what is symbolic about Jesus being born in a stable and placed in a manger?

First, let’s start with the question, what is a manger? A manger (crib), sometimes called a trough, is a structure used to feed large farm animals. It is usually made of stone or wood and can be found in stables, caves or any where animals are housed. Mangers are always kept full of food so that the animals can come and eat whenever they want and as often as they want. The word “manger” comes from the French word, mangier (to eat) and the Latin word, mandere (to chew).

As you all know, Jesus was not born in a stable and placed in a manger by choice, or was He? The story goes, there was no room at the Inn and when it was time for Jesus to be born, Joseph and Mary ended up in a stable. Now, we all know God knows everything way in advance. He is the planner and THE ORIGINATOR of EVERYTHING. So, could it be that it was His plan to have His son, Jesus, the Savior for All Mankind, be born in a manger and if so, why? Maybe because He wanted all people, wise men, shepherds, kings, queens, rich and poor, to have access to see the New Born King. That might not have been possible if He had been born in a hotel, an inn, or a palace. Or maybe because God wanted Jesus to be placed in a manger, a trough, a place for slop and scraps to be fed to animals, a place where all animals could go and eat 24/7.

THE MANGER…and Jesus being placed in a manger after his birth, symbolizes His life beginning with ALL having access to Him and for Him to be the Food of Life for ALL. So Manger Boy, we celebrate you for being the gift that never stops giving!
