The word Sabbath comes from the Hebrew word, “Shabbath,” which means “a day of rest.” This word first appeared in Genesis after God created the Heaven and the Earth. He created the Heaven and the Earth in six days and on the seventh day, Genesis 2:30 reads, “The Lord blessed the seventh day and made it holy because on it He rested from all the work of creating that He had done.’

Now, God didn’t rest because He was tired. God doesn’t get tired. He works 24/7 for us. Getting tired is not in His DNA. He rested on the seventh day to marvel and celebrate all of the wonderful things he had done and created. He wanted to take a day and gloat, I ain’t mad at him for that. But God gave us the Sabbath so that we could rest and find comfort in knowing that He’s got us and that His son, Jesus, has us covered.

The Sabbath day points us to Jesus. God sent Jesus to earth to fulfill the Sabbath. Jesus broke the chains of sin and death, giving us hope in eternal rest with His Father. As a matter of fact, Jesus is known as the “Lord of The Sabbath.” He declared himself Lord of The Sabbath. Matthew 12:8 reads, “For the Son of man is Lord…even of the Sabbath Day.” This means that we can rest on the Sabbath, not only physically, but rest in Jesus. In Matthew 11:28, Jesus extends a comforting invitation, “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

The Sabbath is a gift from God so take advantage of your gift, your Sabbath Day. Pick a day, any day ( most people choose Saturday or Sunday), to rest, to celebrate all that God has created, and to celebrate HIM!
