The Bible describes jealousy as a negative, sinful emotion that can lead to harmful actions and destructive behavior. Now, the Bible also talks about a “divine jealousy.” That’s the kind of jealousy that God has for His people or a healthy, protective jealousy that can be found in relationships. But for the most part, jealousy is thought of as a negative emotion, so let’s tackle that interpretation first.
When most people think about jealousy, they think of a destructive force that can lead to anger, rage and violence. Proverbs 14:30 reads, “A peaceful mind gives life to the body, but jealousy rots the bones.” Jealousy is also connected to other sins like selfishness. James 3:16 reads, “For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and very vile practice.”
So how do you overcome jealousy? Start by confessing and repenting because it is classified as a sin, and that’s what you do when you have sinned. Next, ask God to help you get delivered from the spirit of jealousy. Pray to God that He gives you a heart of gratitude and contentment. Practice being grateful for what God has given you. Focus on your successes and set goals for new ones, and while you are at it, celebrate the success of others instead of being jealous of them. Now, when you can do that, you will get the gold star! And that jealous spirit may truly be on its way out of your system.
I did mention, positive “divine jealousy.” That is pretty much God’s jealousy. He is very protective of His children and wants all of their attention. He does not want to share His children with any other God. Exodus 25:5 reads, “You shall not bow down to them or worship them, for I The Lord, your God am a jealous God.”…and I get it. He does not want anybody or anything else in your head because He knows they will mess you up and ruin the plans He has for you. I get it and I will obey. I’m praying you will too.
So as a recap, if you are looking to get delivered from the spirit of jealousy, acknowledge you have that emotion, confess and repent, pray for God’s help, shift your focus to your strengths, avoid comparisons, celebrate your successes and the successes of others and you’ll be fine.
