By definition, HOPE is an optimistic state of mind that is based on an expectation of positive outcomes. But in the Bible, HOPE is the confident expectation of what God has promised and its strength is in His faithfulness. Some people confuse HOPE with FAITH. They are not the same and are not interchangeable. FAITH is the result of current belief systems as shaped by experiences, whereas HOPE is the product of desiring a future outcome. So FAITH is in “the now” and HOPE is in “the future.”
Hope is a gift from God. It’s a part of His master plan for us. Jeremiah 29:11 reads, “For I know the plans I have for you” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jesus is sometimes called “the hope of the world” because our future blessings that we are hoping for can only come through Him and His promises for us and to us through His Word. HOPE is a “strength builder” as long as you are putting your hope in God. Isaiah 40:31 confirms that. It reads, “But those who hope in the Lord shall renew their strength. They will soar on wings and soar like eagles, they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”
Hope has healing mechanisms. It reduces feelings of helplessness, increases happiness, reduces stress and improves your quality of life. Hope is powerful! So how do you maintain hope during challenging times?
1. Hit pause and do a reset. Focus on all the things you have to be grateful for. Your glass is STILL half full and not half empty. 2. Limit your “bad news intake.” This may mean less consumption of negative news on television, radio and social media.
3. Focus on what you have to look forward to. Look beyond your current situation. There’s a blessing for you on the other side of “through.”
4. Talk to hopeful people. Just like misery loves company, hopeful people love company too. Find them and fellowship with them.
The key to maintaining HOPE is to put your HOPE in GOD. Psalm 33:20-22 says, “We put our hope in the LORD; He is our protector and our help. We are glad because of Him; we trust in His Holy name. May your constant love be with us…LORD, as we put our HOPE in you.”
