I had a CPA license on the wall and more than $100,000 in debt.

On paper, I understood money. I knew how to prepare tax returns, keep businesses compliant, and help clients meet their obligations to the IRS. What I didn’t understand was how to use those same financial systems to intentionally build wealth.

That experience changed the way I think about tax planning.

Compliance Is Only the Starting Point
Traditional tax work is largely backward-looking. Your financial year ends, your records are gathered, and your tax professional determines what happened and reports it correctly.

That work is important. But compliance alone does not answer a different question: What could you have done differently before the year ended?

That is where tax strategy begins.

Instead of simply asking whether a tax return is accurate, proactive planning looks at how the business is structured, how the owner is compensated, when income and expenses are recognized, and which legitimate tax strategies support the owner’s broader financial goals.

I realized I had been trained to report financial decisions without spending enough time thinking about how those decisions could be structured differently in the first place.

From Reporting Money to Directing It
That realization changed how I approached my own finances and how I advised clients.

Entity structure stopped being just paperwork. Tax planning stopped being something that happened during filing season. Cash flow, retirement planning, business profitability, and wealth creation became interconnected pieces of the same financial picture.

The tax code had not changed. My approach to using it had.

That distinction matters for successful business owners. A company can generate significant revenue and still leave the owner wondering where the money went. More revenue alone does not solve an inefficient financial structure.

My own experience taught me that financial progress often begins when you stop looking only at what happened and start planning for what could happen next.
