The term “false gods” generally refers to any deity, idol, or entity worshipped in various belief systems that is not the one true God. You know who the one true God is, right? God that is in the Bible. The eternal, supreme creator and ruler of the universe. The one who made heaven and earth and everything in between. He is the single, divine being who exists in three distinct, co-equal persons known as the Trinity: God the Father, God the Son (Jesus Christ), and God the Holy Spirit. When it comes to Christians, anything or anyone else that is considered a God, is fake news. Don’t even think about considering anything or anyone else your God. If you want to make God mad, do that. The very first Commandment in the Ten Commandments is, “Ye shall have no other God before me.” (Exodus 20:3). He goes even further in Exodus 20:4-5 and says, “You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord, am a jealous God…” So don’t play with God.

Now, there have been many other false Gods who have been worshipped and they are called idols. There are scriptures throughout the Bible that assures you they are not the real deal and you should not follow them:

Isaiah 46:9: “Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me,”
Deuteronomy 4:35: “Unto thee it was shewed, that thou mightest know that the LORD he is God; there is none else beside him.”

James 2:19: “Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.”

Isaiah 45:5: “I am the LORD, and there is none else, there is no God beside me: I girded thee, though thou hast not known me.”

Today’s false Gods are usually not tangibles. Things like money and the pursuit of success become the things you put first in your life instead of God. Being cocky and egotistical can make you think you have all the answers and you don’t need to put God first. Having power and control can have you thinking you are king of the universe and not God. Philosophers and theologians often speak of the “Four Idols” (Money, Power, Pleasure and Fame) as the primary counterfeits keeping you from keeping God first and keeping Him the true God in your life. God is not interested in being our “favorite God.” He wants to be our only God. So, if you are harboring false Gods, please work on letting them go. Like Joshua said in Joshua 24:23, “Now then, get rid of the foreign gods that are among you and yield your hearts to the Lord the God of Israel.”
