Election Day is Tuesday, November 3, 2020. Minnesota allows any voter to request a ballot by mail. You can also vote in person. Minnesota offers early voting.

Vote early

Minnesota voters can also vote before Election Day. The early voting period runs from Friday, September 18, 2020 to Monday, November 2, 2020, but dates and hours may vary based on where you live.

What to bring

  • You do not need to show ID to vote in Minnesota if your voter registration is current and active.
  • If you’re voting for the first time in Minnesota, you will have to show ID to vote if you registered by mail and your ID number could not be verified by the state, or if you are registering to vote on Election Day. Acceptable forms include: a valid ID with current name and address, which can be expired (e.g. driver’s license, Minnesota ID card, learner’s permit, US passport, student ID from a Minnesota high school, college, or technical school, U.S. military or veteran ID, or a tribal ID card with name, address, photo and signature); a photo ID and a document with current name and address, which can be shown on an electronic device (e.g. utility bill, bank or credit card statement, mortgage or lease); a registered voter from your precinct who can confirm your name and address; notice of late registration; valid registration in the same precinct; college student ID (if a student housing list is provided); or a staff person of a residential facility.

Who can vote

To register in Minnesota you must:

  • be a citizen of the United States
  • be a resident of Minnesota for 20 days before the next election
  • maintain residence at the address given on the registration form
  • be at least 18 years old on election day
  • if previously convicted of a felony, your felony sentence has expired or been completed, or you have been discharged from the sentence
  • not be under a court-ordered guardianship in which the right to vote has been revoked
  • not be found by a court to be legally incompetent to vote

Vote by mail

  1. Request your mail-in ballot with a mail ballot application.
  2. Fill out the application completely.
  3. Submit the request to your local election office. You should request your ballot as far in advance of the election as possible. The deadline to request a ballot by mail is (received by) Monday, November 2, 2020.
  4. When your ballot arrives, read it carefully and follow the instructions to complete it and return it.
